This week’s recipe is for a version of homemade hair gel. I no longer have the exact link to where I first found this recipe, but there are recipes similar to this one all over the internet.
It’s really easy and cheap to make, and works as good as the commercial stuff.
You will need:
- ½ teaspoon unflavored, clear gelatin (at the grocery store, look for Knox brand)
- 1 Cup water
- 7 drops essential oil, if desired
- An empty gel container (can be a spray or squeeze bottle)
Bring the water to a boil and dissolve the gelatin. After it has cooled a bit, pour the mixture into your old gel container. Add essential oil, if desired. Store in fridge.
What I like best about this recipe is, again, that it works really well, it’s painfully easy to make, and super cheap. The odd thing about it is that you do need to keep it refrigerated, but that’s not really a big deal after you get used to it.
There is an important downside to this homemade gel however, and I do have to share that this is the first recipe I’ve tried that failed my making the switch tests. But not because it didn’t work well, which is why I’m still sharing it. The issue is that because it doesn’t have any chemical preservatives, it will go bad after about 2 weeks. When you make a batch, you’ll have to be careful to label it with the date and smell it carefully after about 10 days. The recipe doesn’t make very much though, so if you use gel every day, you should be able to use it up before it starts to turn.
My problem is that I just don’t really use gel often enough. I’d make a batch, and only use it once or twice before it was bad. And if that wasn’t enough, I’d forget to smell it first, so I wouldn’t notice it had gone bad until after I had already sprayed it thoroughly in my hair. Not good. So I’m begrudgingly back to using commercial gel, but since I don’t use it very often it lasts a long time.
Anyone have any good solutions for helping the gel keep longer?
EDIT: I have since found a better recipe. It works better (for my hair, at least) and doesn’t go bad very quickly (if at all). Find it here.
